BIRDING TRAIL

④ Apariça

This viewpoint over a region of steppe-like habitat is typified by vast, rolling grassland punctuated with individual and small groups of trees, namely eucalypts and Holm Oak Quercus ilex.

From here, especially during spring, it is possible to observe several bird species that are steppe specialities and consequently are dependent upon the continued existence of this diminishing habitat. Particularly noteworthy is the magnificent Great Bustard Otis tarda (YR), performing its spectacular group displays during the months of March and April and the much smaller Little Bustard Tetrax tetrax (YR), displaying males in April and May announcing their presence with far-carrying, bizarre, rasping calls. Both Montagu’s Harriers Circus pygargus (SP/SU) and Lesser Kestrels Falco naumanni (WI/SP/SU) quarter the wide-open spaces in search of their prey, while the colourful European Roller Coracias garrulus (SP/SU) favours a hole in an old tree (or a nest box) in which to nest.
