BIRDING TRAIL

③ Terges River

At this point the River Terges and Cobres marks the transition from steppe to montado. The riverside vegetation attracts a suite of charismatic species among which Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis (YR), Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin Cercotrichas galactotes (SP/SU) and Common Nightingale Luscinia megarhynchos (SP/SU) are particularly notable. Away from the river, the undulating landscape is characterized by Holm Oak Quercus ilex woodland favoured by aerial feeding parties of European Bee-eaters Merops apiaster (SP/SU), an occasional Woodchat Shrike Lanius senator (SP/SU) perched on its favourite lookout post and the haunting song of the otherwise inconspicuous Woodlark Lullula arborea (YR).
