Off the Road - Into the Wildscapes [Stage 3]
Stage between Ourique and Almodôvar, a stage specially dedicated to archaeology.
Along the way, visit Castro da Cola and the old fortified settlement “Mesas de Castelinho”. When you arrive at Santa Clara, visit the Manuel Vicente Guerreiro Museum and in Almodôvar, immerse yourself in the Writing of the Southwest by visiting the museum dedicated to it.

At first, the path will be fast and fluid through the montado open landscapes.
The archaeological site of Castro da Cola will be the first highlight of the morning. Located near the Mira River, it has been an important settlement since the Neolithic period, occupied throughout the ages by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Arabs.
You will then follow along the Mira river, crossing it several times. When passing through the villages of Gomes Aires and Santa Clara-a-Nova don’t forget to refill your water canteen and to enjoy a bit of small talk with the local people.
On the way to Almodôvar you should stop by the archaeological site of the Mesas do Castelinho to understand more about the history of the region.

Medieval Bridge – Almodôvar

Of roman inspiration, built around the XII century, more commonly known as the middle ages, this bridge is 25 meters long and features three arches. This was an essential bridge on the road between Beja and the Algarve.
Museum of Southwest Writing

The so-called Southwestern Writing was the first form of writing in the Iberian Peninsula, born about 2500 years ago and is still undecipherable. / In this collection is The Warrior Stele, a nickname given to a human figure interpreted as a warrior. No one can translate the inscription and it is one of more than 20 pieces from this collection that continues to intrigue historians. /

Castro da Cola

Castro da Cola is classified as a National Monument and is part of a larger archaeological site that includes Megalithic and Calcolithic monuments, including a necropolis from the Bronze and Iron Ages. / The castle was occupied by different civilizations. During the Islamic presence in the Iberian peninsula, the castle was reinforced to serve as an outpost. The fortification controlled one of the principal routes of passage into the Algarve.
Ermida Nossa Senhora da Cola

The chapel dedicated to the Our Holy Lady of Cola was built on the place were an older chapel already existed in the 14th century. The temple is located in a rural place, near the site of Castro da Cola and over the centuries pilgrim came here for praying.
