Birdspot - Mértola castle
A great spot for birdwatching with an amazing view
From Mértola and its nearby surroundings, it is possible to see birds that use both artificial nests (installed by the municipality and the Guadiana Valley Natural Park) and within crevices in the castle wall. There are several occupied artificial nests in a municipality building at Praça Luis de Camões, in the centre of the town. Here, during the breeding season, it is possible to observe the falcons relatively closely, and at the same time observe the reaction from a colony of House Martins and Western Jackdaws’ who are protecting their eggs or chicks from predators.
