Into the path of Portugal (PR1 CVR)
Hiking trail along Castro Verde Biosphere Reserve with opportunities for bird watching and a stop at the historical site of S. Pedro das Cabeças.
The trail begins at the village of Namorados (the word means “boyfriends” in English) and leads to the fields of the cereal steppe of Castro Verde. This territory is classified as a Biosphere Reserve due to the presence of endangered bird species such as the Great Bustard (Otis tarda).
The agriculture practiced in the fields along the trail are compatible with the preservation of the local biodiversity and continues to be an important source of income for local farmers. This trail will also go through areas of Mediterranean forest (montado) with cork trees (Quercus suber) and other oaks (Quercus rotundifolia) which provide habitat to many species of birds and mammals.
Along the way, you can also visit the historical place of São Pedro das Cabeças, where the first Portuguese king fought an epic battle against Moorish kings. You will arrive at a charming white chapel on the top of the hill with a view of the surrounding landscape.
