This is one of our more isolated and challenging journeys through the Portugal Wildscapes. Here you will cycle on a territory of transition between the regions of Alentejo and Algarve.

In the small villages along the way, you will be able to get water, food and perhaps to taste the local liqueur of Arbutus (medronho), a red fruit growing in shrubs.

You will cross the river Vascão, a biodiversity hotspot, where you may get to see the ancient watermills.

As you near the eastern part of the journey you will ride close to the River Guadiana and finally arrive in Mértola with the castle greeting you. It’s time to rest and to explore the heritage.

Tips, hints and links

In Almodôvar you can visit the Southwest Writing Museum.

Before arriving at the village of São João dos Caldeireiros you may take a short detour to have a soak at the sulphurous hot springs of Água Santa da Herdade, traditionally sought by local people to treat the injuries of the body.
