Vascão river trail (PR8 MTL)
Nature trail along the river Vascão, between two ancient watermills, with many opportunities for bird watching.
This trail leads along the river Vascão, a torrential water stream that flows into the river Guadiana. This area is classified as a protected habitat due to the presence of several endangered species, including the endemic fish Saramugo (Anaecypris hispanica).
The trail will begin near a bridge where the ancient watermill “Moinho das Relíquias” is located. During the walk, you will see several signposts explaining what are the species present along the different biotopes that you will cross. Near the river, you will see several bird species but also amphibious creatures and fish. You will reach the second watermill called “Moinho do Alfares” and can explore the hydraulic structures and the role the mill played in bread production. From here you will cross to the other side of the river for your return.
